Murree To Get A Chair Lift Car, Cable Car And Sky Walk Bridge
Murree tourism update: Planning & Development (P&D) Board/Department clears feasibility for a Sky Walk Glass Bridge and a Lakot to Pindi Point cable car. Learn budgets, route details, and timelines.
Punjab’s PDWP (Provincial Development Working Party) has approved feasibility studies for a Sky Walk Glass Bridge in Murree and a chairlift along with a cable car between Lakot and Pindi Point, Murree.
What exactly has Punjab PDWP approved for Murree?
The Punjab Planning & Development Working Party has approved feasibility studies for two tourism projects in Murree. This is the study phase, not construction. Murree is often the first stop for tourists, and managed tourist attractions can improve the visitor experience. The concerned authorities recorded over 53,000 vehicles entering Murree on Independence Day (August 14, 2025). Therefore, planning and development of new, organized experiences can enhance the quality time. Friends and family can visit these places to have good time. Following are the approved projects:
- Sky Walk Glass Bridge:
A proposed glass sky walk to offer panoramic, bird’s-eye views of Murree and the surrounding pine-covered hills. The feasibility allocation is Rs 72.152 million. Details like exact location, design, safety standards and ticketing will be decided after the study. - Chairlift & Cable Car (Lakot ↔ Pindi Point):
A proposed ropeway connecting Lakot to Pindi Point to ease short car trips and improve access between two busy nodes. This is separate from the existing Patriata (New Murree) chairlift and cable car. The feasibility allocation is Rs 90 million. Final alignment, capacity, environmental approvals and timelines will depend on the study outcomes.
When will the developments happen?
As of now, only feasibility studies are carried out for skywalk glass, chairlift and cable car. The studies will test route options, engineering, safety standards, environmental impact, demand, and the financing model. The construction of real estate projects, timelines of completion, and ticketing will come after the studies are cleared.
Where is the proposed route and budget?
The ropeway is between Lakot and Pindi Point, near Murree’s main tourist belt. This project is not to be confused with Patriata (New Murree). That is a different existing chairlift and cable car corridor. Lakot and Pindi Point is an ideal route which is above the pine trees, with a serene experience.
According to the reports, Rs 72.152million is dedicated for the Sky Walk and Rs 90million for the Lakot to Pindi Point route. The meeting was chaired by Dr Naeem Rauf, Chairman, Planning & Development Board. This decision was taken for the improvement and development of tourist destinations in Murree.
If the studies pass, Murree gets a signature viewing experience and a ropeway that can move people between two busy nodes without adding more short car trips. That can ease parking pressure, spread footfall beyond Mall Road, and create new touchpoints for guided walks and small cafés along the corridor.
What could visitors expect if the projects proceed?
A Sky Walk Glass Bridge is typically a controlled entry viewpoint with safety fencing and timed slots. A chairlift and cable car can shorten travel time, give consistent views, and reduce stop-and-go traffic near the viewpoints. Final features will depend on what the feasibility team and regulators approve.
How does this differ from Patriata?
Patriata (New Murree) is a separate, existing attraction with its own chairlift and cable car route. The Lakot–Pindi Point proposal is a different corridor. Keeping them distinct helps visitors choose the right ride and helps planners manage traffic better.
What are the next steps and likely timelines?
After feasibility, the government would review the findings, complete environmental approvals, finalize the financing structure, and then move to tender and construction. Mountain projects take time because of terrain, weather, and safety requirements. Multiple outlets confirm we are still at the study step.
Are there other tourism studies in the same PDWP cycle?
Yes. The same cycle also referenced feasibility items like an Indus River cable car at Kalabagh, Mianwali. This shows a broader tourism push, not a one-off decision. This project will expand the tourism quality in the region.
The local businesses should plan flexible products that can plug into the new flow if approved:
- 60–90 minute guided walks that start or end near the proposed terminals
- Quick-serve menus for small cafés so families move faster
- Clear WhatsApp pre-arrival messages about weather and road status
- Partnerships for parking and shuttle management instead of ad-hoc solo trips
What should travelers know right now?
Enjoy current spots like Pindi Point and, separately, Patriata, but treat the new projects as works in study. Follow official updates rather than rumors. When feasibility milestones are announced, you will get better clarity on routes, ticketing, and opening windows.
Status check (as of Aug 25, 2025): Feasibility studies approved. Budgets reported at Rs 72.152m and Rs 90m. Meeting coverage names Dr Naeem Rauf as chair. No construction start has been announced yet.
