Pakistan’s First Tourism Highway
Pakistan is getting its first tourism highway in Lahore. The Wagah Heritage Corridor is dedicated to tourism by the Punjab government. The construction has been completed on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The project is designed to enhance travel infrastructure and tourism along the route to Wagah Border, Lahore.
The highway is of 13 kilometers that spans from Quaid – e – Azam Interchange to Wagah Border’s Zero Line. The Punjab government has spent 285 million PKR on the tourism highway. The main road is 68 feet wide with 20 feet wide service roads constructed on both sides to facilitate heavy traffic flow.
Infrastructure Developments
The project is developed and the infrastructure is developed along the tourism highway route. There is a 22 kilometer Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) drainage system to avoid waterlogging and improve sanitation. Furthermore, a 10 kilometer decorative wall is constructed on the route. There are modern solar powered street lights to improve road safety and energy efficiency.
The Wagah Heritage Corridor provides better travel facilities for domestic and international tourists, especially for those who come to attend daily flag-lowering ceremonies of Pakistan and India at the Wagah border. Moreover, the visitors, including the Sikh community from India, could have a view of national figures and cultural displays that represent the heritage of Pakistan. This border area is first of its kind in Pakistan.
